Sep 29, 2021 · The survival rate is around 90% if the victim is rescued within the first 15–20 min (‘survival phase’). Thereafter, survival probability drops sharply to about 30% (~35 min after burial). The main cause of death in this second phase is asphyxia (‘asphyxia phase’); asphyxia causes about 75% of overall avalanche deaths.
