    • In Short: Travelling The Waikato Region

The Waikato region is pretty big, it’s the fourth largest region in New Zealand by land area and population and home to the fourth largest city, Hamilton. Given the 240000 km to explore, you’ll want to know exactly where to find all the essential places to see Waikato offers. The map below has them all for you. As you can see most of the Waikato pl...

The list of places to visit in Waikato could go on and on for pages, especially if you include all the amazing natural attractions Waikato has to offer, but I’ve tried to keep it to just the 15 best things to do with a mix of options to suit all tastes.

    7. Hamilton Gardens

I grew up in Hamiltonand I can honestly say the Hamilton Gardens are the best places to visit in town, and since Hamilton is the largest town in the Waikato they’re a Waikato must do too. The Hamilton Gardens is made up of 5 different collections of themed gardens which include everything from an Indian Char Bargh garden to an Ancient Egyptian Garden on top of the obligatory rose gardens. These themed gardens are absolutely stunning, in fact, they’re a popular wedding photo spot. Entry to the...

    8. Cambridge

Cambridge is the most beautiful small town in the Waikato. I love just wandering around and stopping into all the cute boutiques and cafes. While you could easily spend a lot of money here you absolutely don’t have to, Cambridge has enough free attractions that exploring the town is amongst the best cheap things to do in the Waikato. There is a beautiful short walk around lake Te Koo Utu which is an oasis of calm in the centre of Cambridge. And, if you’re there on a Saturday, there are Farmer...

    9. Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls are a stunningly beautiful place to visit in Waikato and an ideal stop on the way to or from Raglan (number 15 on this list). The falls are very easily accessible, only a 10-minute walk from the carpark to the lookout point and manageable in a wheelchair or pushchair, so they’re ideal for anyone who likes to get out and see nature without doing big hikes. The water cascading 55 metres down into the rock pool is postcard perfect. While the lookout is at the top, you can walk...

    11. Waikato Museum

It might seem strange to put a museum at the top of the family-friendly things to do in the Waikato, but the Waikato Museum has tons of interactive activities in the Exscite area that are perfect for younger kids. These are mostly science-focused, including teaching kids about the geography of the region. Kids could be entertained for hours here. For adult visitors, the Waikato Museum is the place to go to learn about the history of the Waikato and particularly the Māori chiefs who once ruled...

    12. Otorohonga Kiwis

Otorohanga is the Kiwiana capital of New Zealand, and you’ll notice that when you drive past the giant corrugated iron kiwi on the way into town. However, there aren’t just metal kiwis in Otorohanga, there are real live ones too. At the Otorohanga Kiwi House, they have been actively breeding kiwis for 50 years. Kids will love getting to meet these New Zealand icons as well as tuatara, ancient lizards native to New Zealand, and other native animals. At the sanctuary, you can learn about kiwis...

    13. Paeroa L&P

Rather than a full day Waikato activity, Paeroa is worth visiting to see the giant L&P bottle in the centre of town. If you haven’t tried it, L&P is the national soft drink of New Zealand, it tastes like a cross between lemonade and ginger beer. Grabbing a photo at this icon is a must while in the Waikato. You can easily stop via Paeroa on your way to the Hauraki Rail Trail or the Te Aroha hot springs.

If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Waikato while exploring the area, I’d recommend finding accommodation in Hamilton as it has the largest selection of hotels, motels and hostels and is central to all the activities in Waikato that you could want to do. Here are the best options for Hamilton Waikato accommodation in each category:

The ibis offers very similar amenities to the Novotel in a similar location but at a more affordable price point. Rooms are slightly smaller but it’s otherwise a great place to stay in the Waikato for families or travellers looking for value. Click here to book rooms online

Hopefully, you love your time in the Waikato, exploring all the great Waikato places to visit, and it leaves you wanting to see more of this stunning part of New Zealand. 5. Apr 15, 2020 · There are some plans for a new airport but as of 2020 there was nothing but desert at its planned site. The only way to get to Santo Antão is by ferry from the city of Mindelo, on the neighboring island of Sao Vicente. The ferry costs about 800 escudos one way and takes about an hour.
